Benefits of Stretching

The body is flexible. It’s supposed to be flexible. You have to be able to bend and reach that something you dropped on the floor. You need to be able to zip the back of your favorite dress on your own. You must be able to reach that book you need to read on the top shelf.

These are simple activities. No big deal, you merely stretch out a bit. However, if you have difficulty doing such simple motions, then you have to stretch your limits. You need a stretching program.

Stretching is simply the act of extending to full length the body or any part of it. This activity involves straightening or stretching the structure or the limbs.

Stretching is pretty easy and can be done by most people. Simple stretches can be done every day. They can be incorporated into your daily activities, and don’t require much of your time.

Stretching exercises can also be done while training. Actually, stretching is an essential part of any training or sport. Stretching the body and the limbs is good preparation for a rigorous activity.

Here's some of the many benefits of stretching:

  1. Increased Range of Motion: If you consistently stretch, the length of your muscles and tendons is increased. This will increase your range of motion, and will help avoid injury.

  2. Increased Skill: When you have a wide range of motion, you will be able to do more things. For example, you can jump high and not feel the pain when you land. This is important in many sports, and will also enable a more active lifestyle.

  3. Injury Prevention: Stretching can prevent injury to joints, tendons and muscles. When muscles and tendons are well-flexed, they are in good working order. This aids in faster recovery and decreased soreness. The muscles of the body will be able to take more exhausting and rigorous movements with less likelihood of being injured.

  4. Reduced Muscle Tension: If the muscles are given regular exercise and stretching, it is less likely that they will contract, thus avoiding muscle pain.

  5. Enhanced Energy: Being able to move more easily will give you more energy. Stretching will enhance your awareness of your body’s capabilities. You’ll be motivated to move rather than zone out in front of the TV.

Incorporate stretching in your everyday activities, bending and flexing whenever possible. It has benefits you can’t say “no” to. Do what it takes to keep your body healthy.
